Fixed Installation Testing:

The purpose of the Fixed Installation Testing is to check for safety of persons and livestock and protect them from the effects of electric shock and burns.  It also prevents damage to property by fire and heat arising from any defects.

The Inspection & Testing should be carried out in such a way as to minimise disturbance to the installation and inconvenience to the user.  Where there is a need to turn off part or all of the installation, precautions will need to be taken.

The Inspection of the installation will include:

  • The disconnection of the circuit under test for a short period of between 10 to 20 minutes.
  • The checking of joints & connections, conductors, flexible cables, cords, accessories & switches.
  • Comments on any problems found will be recorded and a code given to their level of danger.

The testing of the installation is supplementary to the inspection of the installation.  Any recordings taken will be noted and compared with the relevant standards.  These results will then tell us if the electrical safety devices will operate under fault conditions, thus protecting persons, livestock and property.

On completion of the work the results and extent of the Fixed Installation Testing will be recorded on the appropriate NICEIC paper work.  This will include:

  • A description of the extent of the work carried out.
  • Any limitations, which may have been imposed during the inspection & testing of the installation.
  • Give details of any damage, deterioration, defects, dangerous conditions and any non-compliance, which may give rise to danger.
  • A schedule of inspection.
  • A schedule of test results.
  • A notice as per Regulation 514-12-01 will be fixed in a prominent position at or near the distribution board under test.

The Fixed Installation Testing is only carried out by electricians.  We have found there is no substitute for the experience of a time served electrician.

Portable Appliance Testing:

The requirements of the Electricity at Work Regs 1989 are that electrical equipment shall be maintained so as to prevent danger.

Inspection and Testing are means of determining whether maintenance is required.

The inspection & testing includes the following:

  • A full visual inspection of the appliance under test including its plug, flex and appliance.
  • The retermination of the flex, in the plug or/and the appliance (where possible).
  • Various tests carried out using a dedicated Portable Appliance Tester the results of which are recorded in its memory.
  • A passed or failed label applied which has a unique serial number.
  • A computer print out of the asset register.
  • A computer print out of the test results indicating whether an appliance has passed or failed.
  • The removal of all old appliance testing labels (where possible).

Should an appliance fail any part of the test that is not covered by the above, but is repairable, then we can give quotes for the work required, enabling the appliance to pass the test.
